Lantmännen’s Sustainable IT Infrastructure with Conapto
Lantmännen is an agricultural cooperative, and Northern Europe’s leader in agriculture, machinery, bioenergy and food products. Lantmännen is owned by 18 000 farmers with activities in the entire value chain from field to fork.
Lantmännen’s steadfast commitment to sustainability is evident in their approach to IT infrastructure. As they seek to forge a path towards a greener future, the choice of a lean and environmentally conscious data center becomes important . This underscores the main reason why Lantmännen entrusted Conapto as their colocation service provider, aligning perfectly with their sustainability goals.
As a customer of Conapto since 2016, Lantmännen has been committed to leveraging technology in ways that minimize their environmental impact and enhance operational efficiency.
A significant milestone in Lantmännen’s IT journey occurred in 2019 when they transitioned to purchasing their own hardware directly. By doing this, they gained control over hardware procurement decisions, allowing them to precisely select, utilize, and replace hardware according to their needs and sustainability objectives.
In a subsequent development starting in 2024, Lantmännen took another significant step by opting to purchase colocation services directly from Conapto, rather than relying on an intermediary IT service provider. This decision has the potential to empower Lantmännen with improved support, enhanced cost management, greater agility, and increased flexibility. By directly managing their own IT infrastructure, Lantmännen can better respond to evolving business needs and market dynamics, potentially optimizing their operations and costs.
Ove Hansson, Lantmännen’s Chief Information Officer, highlights the importance of this transition:
By partnering with Conapto, we’re not only ensuring the reliability and efficiency of our IT infrastructure, but also contributing to our journey towards climate-neutral farming – as all our data, services and processes needs to be stored somewhere with the lowest possible energy footprint.
As a customer of Conapto, Lantmännen benefits from access to a diverse range of sustainable solutions, aligning with their commitment to environmental responsibility.
Fossil-Free Electricity
Conapto’s data center facilities operate exclusively on renewable energy sources such as wind and hydroelectricity. In instances of electricity shortages, backup generators run on EcoPar/HVO fuel, a sustainable alternative to diesel, reducing their carbon footprint.
Heat Reuse
Lantmännen values innovative solutions that optimize resource utilization and minimize waste. Conapto’s integration of heat reuse technologies are particularly noteworthy, as it transforms excess heat generated by the data center into a valuable resource for local communities. With heat pumps, Conapto elevate its data center’s excess heat to 70-80 degrees Celsius, channeling it into the district heating network. While many others simply send their waste heat back on the cold side, Conapto stands out, and becomes a valuable asset in the district heating network. Through this method, Conapto can reuse up to 97% of the energy delivered to the customer deployments and at the same time enable the district heating owner to get rid of less sustainable options for heating the water in system.
Recycling and Waste Management
Conapto’s dedication to recycling and responsibly disposing of end-of-life equipment and materials resonates strongly with Lantmännen’s sustainability goals. By recycling and reusing worn-out equipment, Conapto’s total CO2 savings amount to an impressive 365,727.37 tonnes CO2e.
Transparent CO2 Reporting and Long-Term Ownership
Conapto, in cooperation with GoClimate, maintains transparency through rigorous CO2 reporting following the guidelines established by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG protocol) Corporate Standard, the world-leading standard for measuring and managing emissions with an impact on the climate. Furthermore, its long-term commitment is evidenced by the ownership structure, being owned by Marguerite II, a pan-European infrastructure fund focusing on renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure.
Partnering with Conapto, Lantmännen demonstrates their commitment to sustainability by integrating eco-friendly practices into their IT infrastructure. Together, we establish a resilient and environmentally conscious framework that bolsters Lantmännen’s operations while actively mitigating their environmental impact.
